Mr. Macdonald has a particular interest in public/private partnerships, and has initiated several joint programs with various government bodies. These have generated significant public benefits including:

• The establishment and construction of the new universal access SkyTrain station at Granville and Dunsmuir Street in downtown Vancouver, in concert with the B.C. Transit Authority. The development was part of a new 450,000 square foot development at that site, which Macdonald owns. Savings to the Province of B.C. exceeded $15 million in this joint venture.

• The remediation of the Britannia Mine in Howe Sound, B.C., just north of Vancouver Macdonald Development acquired approximately 10,000 acres of property at the mine, and worked in collaboration with the Province of British Columbia to enable the mine remediation work to proceed. During the process, Macdonald preserved hundreds of houses on the property, which will stand as low-cost housing for existing residents. MDC is also redeveloping the Britannia retail and commercial precinct, working closely with the B.C. Museum of Mining on the project. Macdonald’s donation to the Province for the Britannia Mine remediation exceeded $7 million.

• The Orpheum Theatre expansion in downtown Vancouver. Macdonald Development is working with the City of Vancouver and Wall Financial Corporation to expand the Orpheum Theatre. The project also includes the construction of a new rehearsal and recital hall and a School of Musical Excellence for the benefit of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra—both part of a new 350,000 square foot development being undertaken next to the Orpheum Theatre, on land which the company has owned for several years. Savings to the City of Vancouver will exceed $15 million, as they will acquire substantial civic assets at no cost to the taxpayer.

• The donation of thousands of acres of environmentally important property to various government bodies and the Nature Trust, in multiple land transactions for parkland and conservation purposes.
